U.S. beats Japan, wins 6th Little League World Series title in 7 years

The boys from Huntington Beach, Calif. brought the Little League World Series championship trophy back to the U.S.A. after a year’s absence.

A bases-loaded single by Nick Pratto with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in the tie-breaking run, sending the Southern California boys to a 2-1 victory against Hamamatsu City, Japan on Sunday afternoon.

As if Pratto weren’t feeling enough pressure to win the game, the crowd added another layer by chanting, “USA! USA!” as he stepped to bat.

“I was just thinking. ‘Oh, God, Oh, God,’ before I was getting in the box,” the 12-year-old Pratto said. “But once I got into the box, I calmed myself by telling myself to just look for a good pitch.”

Like a mini-professional would. Pratto (pictured on the left, with Braydon Salzman on the right) came through with a line drive to center after committing a throwing error earlier that led to Japan scoring its run. He also had the key hit at regionals that sent the U.S. team to South Williamsport, Pa. for the finals.

Pratt, who told EPSN he was experiencing “the greatest moment” of his young life in a postgame interview , said he would remember one instance in particular:

“Oh, that hit. That hit felt good coming off the bat. I just … I knew it was over.”

The kid gets the game-winning hit, and comes through with a major league soundbite.

The U.S. scored its other run on a solo home run by Hagen Danner — who might have the coolest name of any kid on the planet. And the Americans got another strong pitching performance by Salzman, who pitched a complete-game three-hitter. You might remember him as the kid whose cap — notably the bill — saved him from taking a line drive off his head earlier in the tournament. (Salzman also was pictured up top draped in the flag.)

The international tournament, for kids aged 11-13, started with 7,000 teams and took 45 days. The U.S. has won six of the past seven LLWS championships, with Japan winning the exception a year ago.

Oprah says Goodbye after 25 years

The worldwide entertainment icon who for 25 years has changed the face of talk show television will say good bye today. Good bye to her 4pm appointment with millions of viewers everyday who have laughed, cried, and witnessed a woman change the world for the better, and personally made thousands of dreams come true. What made Oprah different from other talk shows was that she used her platform to inspire, motivate, and entertain. Inspiration that was pure and genuine. Oprah became famous for her “favorite things,” spontaneous surprises to her audience, and creating the most emotional moments that would make a grown man cry. This was evident with the dozens of superstars who graced Oprah’s show the past two days to say good bye and to pay tribute to the entertainment icon. Some of the names included: Tom Cruise, Will and Jada Smith, Tom Hanks, Usher, Alicia Keys, Maya Angelou, Simon Cowell, Dr. Phil and many others! Oprah will say good bye today, but I get the impression it is more of a see you later; later on her OWN network. Guess this leaves the question, what else can Oprah accomplish? Or maybe the question is, what can’t this living legend accomplish?

Cam Newton taken #1 overall in NFL Draft

Former Auburn Quarterback Cam Newton has been taken number 1 overall in the NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. Today is a real dream come true for Cam Newton who despite adversity in college persevered to not only lead his Auburn team to a national championship but also won the Heisman trophy in only one year at Auburn as quarterback. Newton spent the previous year at Blinn Junior College after being kicked out of the University of Florida for receiving stolen merchandise. Newton went from being a junior college quarterback to being a Heisman trophy winner, national champion, and #1 overall NFL draft pick within a year. Wow what a year, opportunity, and a little hard work can do. Congratulations to Newton and the other players who are realizing their dreams with the NFL.
